Portaferry and World War I

Alison Murphy from Portaferry Townscape Heritage Initiative gave a very interesting and informative talk to our Year 10 pupils on Monday 15 June 2015. Her talk was about the fifty three men with Portaferry links who fought and died in World War One.

As the final part of this year’s work on World War I, which included a Last Post event to launch the WWI pop-ups, year 10s from St. Columba’s College visited the Somme Centre on June 19th. Maureen McCarthy, a PRL director, accompanied the group.

St. Columba’s posted the following on Facebook:

‘As part of their ongoing work with on World War I with the Portaferry Townscape Heritage Initiative, Year 10 and Mr Gordon enjoyed a very interesting visit to the Somme Centre today. Pupils really felt that the talks and displays brought the reality of the War home to them.
Our thanks to Allison Murphy from THI for organising the trip today and all of the activities throughout the year. They have really brought History to life for our pupils.’
